Dec 3 - Greater Than

I grew up in a family of math lovers. My dad was a math professor, my mom a math educator, and my brother just plain loved math. I was the outlier.

Math just didn’t really come very easy to me, or bring the joy and happiness that it seemed to bring to the rest of my family.

While the other members of my family could be found together at the dining room table debating a set of theorems on a Saturday evening, I would retreat to the basement, turn some music on, and get out my paint and paintbrushes.

What I didn’t realize is that I was actually doing my own sort of math. I was working with a set of geometric shapes, equations of color, and theorems around texture and form.

When I look at this piece, the pink flowers make a greater than sign and remind me that pursuing my own path with art (and in turn math) has brought me an immense amount of joy and happiness, and that’s greater than anything else in the world.
